In recent years, many of our regular cat clients are finding that keeping their cat and home flea-free is becoming increasingly more difficult. We receive many calls on a daily basis from clients who state that they “never use to have this problem” or the MAJOR misconception that because your cat is indoor only that it will not get fleas. Fleas can cause problems for cats ranging from minor to life-threatening. Not only can these parasites cause severe itching, irritation, and allergies, but they can also transmit tapeworms and diseases.
Fleas do feed on our pets but, they get off and lay their eggs in any carpet, upholstery, cracks, crevices and wood flooring and tiles are not immune. Fleas don’t just bite our pets; they can bite people, too. There is not one universal flea treatment that will work for all cats or situations. In many cases, multiple products may need to be used in order to control the various life stages of the flea. We have extensive training in the products we sell and can recommend the best course of action for your situation. This is one area were diligent prevention can prevent a HUGE problem later. We strongly recommend a monthly preventative flea treatment for your cat year round. Do not stop when you think it is winter or because your cat does not go outside. Again, we have multiple products that are safe and can be used on cats off all ages and medical conditions. For more information, contact us or see the flea article in the Pet Health Library on our site.
